Undergraduate Research

I have been involved in guiding undergraduate research since the early 2000s. I have mentored student research under the McNair Scholars Program, directed several NSF Summer REU Programs at Illinois, and currently serve as Director of the NU-UI Mathematics Summer REU Program.

In addition, for the past few years I have been running three or four semester-long Math 492 research projects each semester, on topics ranging from calculus and geometry to number theory, probability, statistics, and data analytics. Students in my group have presented their work at local and national conferences, participated in outreach activities, won awards for presentations and posters, and have been featured in departmental and university publications; see my Undergraduate Research Page for more.

Math Contests

I have been involved in the UI Math Contest Program since the mid 1980s, and I have been in charge of this program for the past fifteen years. Our program is among the most comprehensive programs of this kind, and it may be the largest such program offered at a public university. Activities include weekly training sessions and practice contests; several local math contests with substantial prize purses; and participation in prestigious national and international competitions. For more information check out the UI Math Contest Website.
