Kedem, Rezk and Solecki to give
invited lectures at 2014 ICM
Professors Rinat Kedem, Charles Rezk, and Slawek Solecki have been invited to give lectures at the 2014 International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM) in Seoul, Korea. Kedem will present her lecture in the Mathematical Physics section, Rezk will present his lecture in the Topology section, and Solecki will present in the Logic and Foundations section. Held once every four years, the ICM is the largest international gathering in mathematics, and invites a select group of mathematicians to report on the most important development in the last four years. Invited lectures at the ICM are among the most prestigious recognitions of research accomplishment in mathematics.
In memoriam
Kenneth Appel, well-known for solving one of the most famous problems in mathematics, the Four Color Conjecture, with colleague Wolfgang Haken, died April 19, in Dover, NH. Appel and Haken answered this question: Is it true that any map can be colored with just four colors so that contiguous countries have different colors? From 1961 to 1993 Appel was a mathematics professor at the University of Illinois where he taught mathematics and did research on group theory and computability theory. In the 1980s he served as Associate Chair of the department of mathematics and directed the program in actuarial science. Read the full Appel obituary.
Donald Burkholder, a renowned mathematician who helped to revolutionize interdisciplinary studies in the areas of probability theory and analysis and who spent his entire career as a professor at the University of Illinois, died April 14 in Urbana, Illinois. Brukholder joined the Departmenet of Mathematics 1964. In 1978 he was appointed Professor in the University of Illinois’ Center for Advanced Study. He retired in 1998. Luo and Rosen to play in the Final Four of Chess
Xin Luo, a sophomore in Mathematics, and Eric Rosen, a freshmen in Mathematics and Computer Science, are part of a team that will compete in what's known as the Final Four for intercollegiate chess. Click to read more about the chess competition.
Nineteen UI mathematicians named AMS Fellows
The new American Mathematical Society (AMS) Fellows program recognizes members who have made outstanding contributions to the creation, exposition, advancement, communication, and utilization of mathematics. The inaugural class of Fellows of the AMS includes nineteen mathematicians from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Read more about AMS Fellows.

Math Placement at Illinois
All new freshmen coming to the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign are required to take the ALEKS Math Placement Exam. All new transfer students who do not already have credit for Calculus I (or a higher level math course) are required to take the ALEKS Math Placement Exam. Information about the ALEKS Math Placement Exam is available on the Department of Mathematics website.
