Research Experiences for Graduate Students (REGS)

The graduate program in our department has a wide variety of research and teaching activities for students. The REGS program specifically focused on the transition from coursework to research for University of Illinois graduate students. It was funded by grant DMS 08-38434 from the National Science Foundation through its Mentoring through Critical Transition Points (MCTP) program. The grant ended on May 31, 2014.

The program had two components:

  1. Summer programs for UI graduate students included mini-courses and funding for individual or group research experiences. New Ph.D. students were eligible to participate in REGS in the summer before starting the graduate program.
  2. Fellowships for up to two UI graduate students in their final year before graduation to support the completion of the thesis and the launching of the research career.

The overall goals of the REGS program were to

  1. Facilitate the transition from coursework to research.
  2. Increase the quality and quantity of publications by our graduate students.
  3. Prepare incoming students for our PhD programs.
  4. Attract and recruit graduate students from under-represented minority groups.
  5. Extend the impact of our department’s graduate programs to invited students from smaller or less research-active departments.
